Zags Set For Matchups With In-State Rivals, Host WSU Thursday

Match 4 THIS WEEK: Gonzaga University matches up with two in-state rivals this week, hosting Washington State University Thursday before heading to Cheney, Wash. for a Sunday afternoon meeting with Eastern Washington University. LAST WEEK: Gonzaga University launched a season-high 29 shots en route to posting a 3-1 non-conference victory over McNeese State University in Spokane last Friday. The Bulldogs used three second half goals to earn the victory over the Cowgirls. Sheridan Jones, a Preseason All-West Coast Conference team selection, finished with two assists as Lori Conrad, Emma Dolcetti and Sarah Rhodes each notched goals for the Zags. COMING UP: This Sunday Gonzaga University heads over to Cheney, Wash. for a 1 p.m. non-conference match against Eastern Washington University. Next weekend will see the Zags head to California to face two perennial national powers in the University of Southern California Sept. 11 and UCLA Sept. 13. THE 2009 SCHEDULE: Gonzaga University is slated to match up with six teams that made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament a year ago along with playing four of its seven West Coast Conference matches on the road in 2009. The Zags first such opponent is Washington State University who comes to the Gonzaga Soccer Field this Thursday. ABOUT THE WASHINGTON STATE COUGARS: Washington State University enters the week with a 2-1-0 overall record and receiving votes in a couple of this week’s national polls. WSU is coming off of a 10-6-5 2008 season that saw them reach the NCAA Tournament and drop its first round match to the University of Texas 1-0. Gonzaga University will be looking for its first ever win over the Cougars (0-15-1 all-time) after dropping a 1-0 decision down in Pullman last season. Kiersten Dallstream paces the club with three goals while Meghan Berlingo owns a 0.70 GAA and one shutout. Head coach Matt Potter is in his seventh season at WSU and owns a 57-44-10 record at the school. ABOUT THE EASTERN WASHINGTON EAGLES: Eastern Washington University enters the week with a 1-1-0 overall record. Gonzaga University leads the all-time series with EWU 10-3-1 and has won the last six matches including a 2-1 double overtime decision in Spokane last season. Brittany Sparks leads the Eagles with two goals. Head coach George Hageage is in his 10th season at EWU and owns a 50-99-12 record at the school. JONES AND CONRAD MAKE IT TWO IN A ROW: Gonzaga University midfielders Sheridan Jones and Lori Conrad have been part of four of the Bulldogs six goals this season. Jones leads the team with three assists and Conrad paces the club with two goals with Conrad picking up a score in each of the first two matches with both coming on headers off of a Jones’ corner kick. KEEP ON FIRING: Gonzaga University launched a season-high 29 shots in last Friday’s 3-1 win over McNeese State University. 16 of those shots were on goal forcing the MSU keeper to make 13 saves. GU forward Sarah Rhodes led all players with 10 shots including five that were on goal. NOW ENTERING THE MATCH: Gonzaga University has played at least 21 of its 26 active players in each of its first two games. 22 players appeared in its season-opening victory over the University of Montana and 21 made it onto the pitch in last Friday’s win over McNeese State University. New head coach Amy Edwards has implemented a new style of play this season that will see the Zags consistently apply offensive pressure throughout the match, requiring a good amount of depth on the team in order to keep fresh legs on the field.
