Zags Head To Colorado Classic, Match Up With #21 Colorado and Denver

Match 9 THIS WEEK: The Gonzaga University women's soccer team matches up with two 2007 NCAA tournament participants in the Colorado Soccer Classic hosted by the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo. The Bulldogs will play #21 Colorado on Friday and the University of Denver Sunday. FOLLOW THE BULLDOGS LIVE: All Gonzaga University home matches will be video streamed and available via Gametracker on the internet at http://www.gozags.com. LAST WEEK: Gonzaga University went 1-1 last week, beating the University of Montana 1-0 last Friday and dropping a 1-0 decision to the University of Wyoming Sunday. Freshman Sarah Rhodes recorded her first career goal and sophomore keeper Lauren Ames posted her fifth career shutout in the GU win. ABOUT THE COLORADO BUFFALOES: The University of Colorado enters the week with a 5-1-1 record and ranked 21st in the NSCAA/addidas poll. This will be the first ever meeting between Gonzaga University and Buffaloes. Nikki Marshall enters the week leading the team in goals scored (4) and in points (9). Bill Hempen is in his eighth season as head coach for CU and owns a 84-52-20 record at the school. ABOUT THE DENVER PIONEERS: The University of Denver enters the week with a 5-1-1 overall record and will play Fresno State University prior to matching up with Gonzaga University. This will be the first ever match between the Bulldogs and the Pioneers. Taryn Hemmings enters the week leading DU in points (12), goals scored (5) and tied for the team lead in assists (2). Jeff Hooker is in his 16th season as head coach for DU and owns an 199-85-29 career record. BULLDOGS AND RANKED OPPONENTS: Gonzaga University will face its first ranked opponent of the season this weekend, matching up with 21st ranked University of Colorado at the Colorado Soccer Classic Friday afternoon. GU posted a 2-1 victory over #21 Santa Clara University last season to pick its first win over a ranked opponent in over two years. The Zags own a 5-44-1 all-time mark against ranked opponents with all five wins coming during head coach Shannon Stiles' tenure. ANOTHER FIRST FOR THE ZAGS: Three players have recorded their first career goals for Gonzaga University this season. Freshman Sarah Rhodes became the latest Bulldog to pick up her first career netter. Rhodes took a pass from junior Christi D'Agostino and found the left corner of the net for what proved to be the match-winner for GU in the 1-0 win over the University of Montana. D'Agostino and redshirt freshman Katie Spangenberg also recorded their first career goals for the Zags this season. D'Agostino's goal proved to be match-winner in the Zags' 1-0 win over Portland State University on Aug. 24 and Spangenberg picked up her first career netter against the University of Washington Aug. 31. TOUGH TIMES IN TOURNAMENTS: Gonzaga University owns a 6-17-1 all-time mark while participating in regular season tournaments and a 0-1 record in its only NCAA tournament appearance in 2005. The Zags have bounced back in the past two seasons though, posting a 1-2-1 record while playing two tournaments in 2006 and picking up two wins in its only tournament appearance last season. GU went 2-0 at the Vanderbilt Tournament in Nashville, Tenn. last season, beating Vanderbilt University and the University of Alabama-Birmingham. RETURNEES LEADING THE WAY: Sophomores Sheridan Jones and Ashley Riley continue to produce for Gonzaga University. Jones, who produced two goals and finished second on the team in shots in 2007, recorded her second goal and second game-winner of the 2008 season in the 1-0 win over California State University Bakersfield Sept. 7. The Hillsboro, Ore. native enters the week leading the team in goals (2) and in points (5). Riley, who finished second on the team in goals and tied for the team lead in assists in 2007, scored her first goal and handed out her first assist of the 2008 campaign in the 3-1 win at Idaho Aug. 29.
