SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga University women’s soccer team dropped a tough 2-0 decision to Pepperdine University in a West Coast Conference match at the Gonzaga Soccer Field Friday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (5-8-2, 0-2-0 WCC) held off a number of Pepperdine offensive attacks throughout the afternoon as the Waves outshot GU 13-4 and finished with a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Pepperdine (6-7-2, 1-1-0 WCC) constantly pushed the ball up field but the Zag defenders turned away the early threats. The Waves pressure eventually broke through, taking 1-0 lead in the 16th minute as Laura Cole took a cross from Emily Wynne and found the left corner of the net for the early score. Early in the second half, Wynne dribbled into open space just inside the 18 and beat charging Bulldog keeper Lauren Ames to put PU up for good, 2-0.

Gonzaga was able to put together a couple offensive threats of their own in the match, but the Wave defense quickly recovered and was able to turn away those GU threats to hold the Zags scoreless. GU’s best chance came early in the first half as freshman Sarah Rhodes fired a shot from 15 yards out along the right side of the 18 but Pepperdine keeper Kayla Stolte raced over to make the save.

Rhodes led the Zags with three shots and Ames made two saves.

The Bulldogs wrap up their three-game homestand on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Loyola Marymount University.
