SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga University women’s tennis team returned to form Saturday, posting a very impressive 7-0 victory over Eastern Washington University at the Spokane Racquet Club. The Zags improved their overall record to 5-2 and won for the fifth time in their last six matches.

Gonzaga picked up the early lead by taking the doubles point after beating the Eagles in all three doubles slates.

In singles play both teams put together a number of exciting matches as a four of the six matchups required decisive third sets. Clare Dodge got the Zags going with an impressive 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles and Rika Mehndiratta followed with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 come-from-behind win at No. 1 singles to put GU up 3-0. Danielle Farmer then followed with a three-set victory at No. 3 singles to clinch the match for Gonzaga. Kristina and Zauere also won in three sets at No. 2 singles as did Sophie Lantta at No. 5 and Jackie Tabb closed out the perfect day with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles.

“The score doesn’t tell how close the match really was,” stated head coach D.J. Gurule. “I was very impressed that we were able to pull out four three-set matches. The team’s focus was as good as I’ve seen this year. Kristina did a great job of coming back from being down one set and 2-5 before winning the third set so handily. Rika and Sophie both did a great job of rebounding from first-set losses. Eastern played very well and it was a good win for us today.”

The Bulldogs will face Seattle University in Pullman, Wash. Feb. 13.
