Kokurina, Mehndiratta Post Victories In Loss

Portland, Ore. - - Aglaya Kokurina and Rika Mehndiratta, both of the Gonzaga University women's tennis team, each posted victories Sunday but it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs dropped a 5-2 decision to West Coast Conference foe University of Portland in Portland, Ore. With the loss the Zags fall to 2-4 including 0-2 against conference opponents. The Pilots improve to 3-5 for the season. Portland jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage after taking two-of-three close doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Gonzaga opened doubles play on a strong note as Clare Dodge and Danielle Farmer defeated Audree Jenks and Anna Gullickson 8-3. Portland responded by taking both the No. 1 and 2 positions. At No. 1 Megan Sporndli and Lindsey Griffin defeated Emily Anderson and Kokurina 9-8 (5) while Sydney Lederhouse and Erin Humphrey fell to Stefanie Doolittle and Jenna Tanzer 9-7 at the No. 3 position. In singles play, Portland took the opening two matches to extend its lead to 3-0. At No. 1, Sporndli downed Anderson in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1 before Gullickson defeated Dodge 7-6 (6), 7-6 (6) at No. 3. Kokurina put Gonzaga on the board, bringing the score to 3-1, with a 7-6 (2), 6-3 victory over Griffin at No. 2. The Pilots' Doolittle captured the victory for Portland at No. 6 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Kristen MacWilliam. Gonzaga narrowed the defeat to a 4-2 mark thanks to a 6-4, 6-3 Mehndiratta decision over Tanzer at No. 5 before Lederhouse closed out the afternoon falling to Feyen 4-6, 7-6 (3), 5-3 (ret.) at No. 6. The Lederhouse/Feyen match was retired due to time constraints.
The Bulldogs will return to the court Feb. 20 when they host Eastern Washington University at the Spokane Racquet Club. Portland 5, Gonzaga 2 2/10/08 - Portland, Ore. |
