Women’s Tennis Rolls to 6-1 Win Over Idaho
Feb. 10, 2018
SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga women’s tennis (4-2) took the doubles point and got off to a hot start in singles on the way to a 6-1 in over Idaho (0-2) on Saturday afternoon at the Stevens Center.
“I thought our energy today was crucial. We started out doubles so aggressively that I really think that helped our mindset throughout the match,” head coach D.J. Gurule said. “Idaho is an NCAA Tournament team the last two years, so we knew they were tough. We are looking forward to a day off and then ahead to next weekend.”
The Zags rolled to the doubles point to start out the day, led by a 6-0 win from Haruna Tsuruta and Alex Bourguignon on No. 3. The GU pair of Ashleigh Jacobs and Nevada Apollo then finished off the point with a 6-2 win on No. 2.
Jacobs and Domonique Garley then put GU out to a 3-0 lead with identical 6-3, 6-1 scorelines on Nos. 5 and 6. On No. 6, Jacobs finished first with a win over Idaho's Marta Maghalaes, while Garley beat Maggie Chen on No. 5.
On No. 2, Rosas had a slow start, but won 12 of the last 13 games to clinch the match and the dual. After going down 1-6 in set one, she came back to beat Maria Tavares 6-0, 6-1 in the final two sets.
GU’s Apollo added a singles win on No. 3 with a perfect third set, 6-2, 4-6, 6-0. Tsuruta then earned a victory of her own in three sets with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win on No. 4.
On No. 1, Whittle was the last to finish on the day, in a match that couldn’t have been closer. Against 42nd-ranked Marianna Petrei, the two traded 7-6 tiebreaks in the first two sets before going to a super tiebreaker third set. In the race to 10, Whittle went ahead early, but Petrei was able to finish strong 10-7.
GU will be back on the Stevens Center courts on Friday with a doubleheader against Seattle U and Montana beginning at 10 a.m. Live video and stats are available on the women’s tennis schedule page at GoZags.com.
