March 3, 2018

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Gonzaga women's tennis stood tall against No. 21 Wichita State on Saturday, but came up just short in a 4-3 loss in a neutral site match at the Jayhawk Tennis Center at the University of Kansas.

The Shockers (11-4) and Zags (8-3) split the three singles matches on the day, but that came after Wichita State had won the doubles point. The Zags eventually tied the match at 3-3, but fell in the final match of the day on Court 2.

Gonzaga's Sophie Whittle, Domonique Garley and Kate Ketels grabbed the victories on the day. Whittle's came against the No. 71-ranked player in the nation, Fatima Bizhukova. The No. 1 player on each team, Whittle battled back from a 7-5 loss in the first set against Bizhukova to grab complete control of the match with a 6-0 second, and 6-3 third set for the win.

Garley was the most dominant of the day on the singles courts, tying the dual score at 1-1 with her 6-0, 6-0 victory on No. 4. That was followed closely by Ketels 6-4, 6-0 win on No. 6 to give the Zags a 2-1 lead in the dual.

After Shocker wins on No. 5 and No. 3, Whittle grabbed her victory at No. 1 to tie the score back at 3-3. On No. 2, GU's Graciela Rosas forced a third set with a tiebreak win the second, but ultimately was defeated.

GU will be back on the courts at the Jayhawk Tennis Center against another ranked opponent in No. 20 Kansas. Check GoZags.com for available links to live coverage.
