Women's Tennis Outlasts Nevada, 4-3
March 19, 2017
RENO, Nevada -- The Gonzaga women's tennis team came back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Nevada 4-3 on Sunday at the McArthur Tennis Center in Reno, Nevada.
"We are happy to finish our Spring Break like this," said Gonzaga head coach D.J. Gurule. "It was a tough match, and Nevada was very competitive."
Graciela Rosas brought home the clinching point for the Zags who won the doubles point and then split the six singles matches with Nevada.
Rosas and doubles partner Sophie Whittle got GU off to a good start with a 6-3 win on court two, but after Nevada earned a win on court one, it was down to court three for the point. The Gonzaga pair of Haruna Tsuruta and Kate Ketels were in control the whole way, taking down Milena Achlamov and Sara Korzeniecki by a score of 6-2.
Nevada took the first two singles matches to finish on court four and two, but Ketels and Domonique Garley put together straight set wins to erase the deficit and put GU back in the lead. Ketels beat Korzeniecki 6-2, 6-0 on court five and Garley beat Achlamov on court six 6-2, 6-4.
Nevada held strong tying the match at three apiece with a win on court one, again putting the final court left as the deciding match.
On court three, Rosas outdueled Adriana Gergelyova 6-4, 6-3 to push GU to the victory.
The 4-3 win moves GU to 3-1 overall in matches with a one-point margin of victory.
"Grace [Rosas] did a fantastic job staying focused and clinching the final point today, especially since she was the last match on against Fresno State," said Gurule. "I was very pleased with the entire team, they battled all Spring Break. We will now refocus to the conference season, specifically San Francisco."
Up next for the Zags is a two-game homestand to begin West Coast Conference play. The Zags will host San Francisco on Saturday, March 25 at 11 a.m. The next day GU will play Santa Clara at 11 a.m., with both matches taking place in The Stevens Center.
