SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team hosted Eastern Washington University Thursday falling 5-2 at the tennis courts on the Bulldogs' campus in Spokane.

With the loss, the Zags fall to 4-15 overall, while the Eagles improve to 10-7 for the season. Thursday's match marked the second of the season between the two schools. Last week, in the first match-up, Gonzaga downed EWU 4-3 in Cheney, Wash.

The Bulldogs opened the afternoon taking two-of-three doubles matches to earn the doubles point and take the early advantage. Carrie Schofield and Aglaya Kokurina opened play defeating the Eagles' Marie Demerath and Amanda Mankovits 8-3 at the No. 3 spot. With the win, the Zag duo of Schofield and Kokurina improve to 6-5 in dual matches. At the No. 2 position, Kendall Bates and Emily Anderson of Gonzaga defeated Rachel Berger and Kerstyn Dolack 8-5 to secure the point. Rounding out doubles play, The Bulldogs' Sydney Lederhouse and Erin Humphrey fell to Kasey Knox and Iliana Petrova 8-6 in the top spot.

Kokurina added the other Gonzaga point during singles play, earning the lone singles win for the Zags. The sophomore posted a three-set victory over Dolack at the No. 2 position (3-6, 6-1, 1-0) to earn improve her record during dual matches to 11-5. Lederhouse and Courtney Lau forced three-sets in their respective matches, despite jumping out to leads after the first set. Lederhouse dropped a decision to Mankovits at the No. 4 position (4-6, 6-0, 6-4), while Lau fell at No. 5 to Sayaka Yoshimoto (5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (7)). Anderson, Bates and Schofield all fell in their respective matches.

 

 

The Bulldogs will return to the courts Saturday when they host Lewis-Clark State College at 10 a.m. The two schools met earlier this season, with Gonzaga prevailing 7-0 over the Warriors. Saturday's match will be held at the tennis courts on the Zags' campus. The courts are located just northwest of the Martin Centre.
