Women's Tennis Drops First Round Of WCC Championships To Pepperdine 6-1

Santa Clara, Calif. - The junior team captain of the No. 8 seeded Gonzaga University women's tennis team, Taio Miller, earned the only point for the Bulldogs as they dropped the opening round of the West Coast Conference tennis championships Friday morning to the No. 1 seeded Pepperdine Waves 6-1 at Santa Clara University. The Waves earned the doubles point when the No. 1 team of Charlotte Vernaz and Veronica Koksova swept Taio Miller and Aaryn Volkmann 8-0. In the No. 2 spot Karin Schlapbach and Ceyda Keyman defeated Jamie Buterbaugh and Sirrah Williams 8-1. Aleksandra Kujawska and Anna Andersson completed the sweep for the Waves with a 8-1 victory over the No. 3 team of Katie Sanders and Connie Head. In singles action Monika Horvath clenched the win for Pepperdine defeating Aaryn Volkmann 6-0, 6-1. The Bulldogs No. 1 singles player, Jamie Buterbaugh forced a tiebreaking set when she won the second set 7-6 after falling to Kosova in the first set 6-3, Kosova defeated her by three to claim the victory. Miller earned the single point for Gonzaga winning the first set 4-1 over Ceyda Keyman, Keyman retired in the second set to give Miller the win. The Bulldogs continue WCC championship action Saturday at 10:30 a.m. against either No. 4 University of San Francisco or No. 5 University of Portland Pilots.
