Zags Conclude Play at Cougar Classic

PULLMAN, Wash. - Gonzaga University sophomore Amanda Becker claimed the No. 1 singles backdraw championship for the Gonzaga women's tennis team on Sunday in the final day of play at the 2005 Cougar Classic hosted by Washington State University. Becker, a native of Lakeville, Pa., was able to cruise her way to the championship of the No. 1 singles backdraw as she handed Eastern Washington University's Illiana Petrova a straight sets loss, 6-3, 6-3. In the No. 2 singles play Gonzaga's Allie Hause wasn't as fortunate as Becker as she was defeated by the University of Portland's Katie Kennel, 6-1, 6-0. In No. 3 singles action GU had two players competing, Erica Moldenhauer and Katie Colton. Moldenhauer was defeated by Portland's Laura Leoni, 6-2, 6-1 and Colton was defeated by EWU's Marie Carrol, 6-2, 6-1. The lone doubles match for the Bulldogs featured a joint team of Gonzaga's Colton and Boise State University's Carolyn Berry. This tandem defeated Montana State University's team of Laura Richert and Allison Frey, 8-3. The Bulldogs will return to action on Friday as they head to Las Vegas, Nev.
