Sept. 18, 2009
PULLMAN, Wash. – The Gonzaga University women’s tennis team opened its fall season at the WSU Cougar Classic Friday. Rika Mehndiratta and Danielle Farmer led the Bulldogs with two wins in the top flight of the doubles bracket to advance to Saturday’s third round of play. Mehndiratta and Farmer paired up to take their first match of the day 8-4 over a tough University of Portland pairing and later posted an 8-4 victory to stay in the winners bracket. The doubles team of Clare Dodge and Gabrielle Verspieren also recorded two victories Friday to advance to Saturday’s third round of play in the doubles Grey bracket. The Bulldogs also had the freshman duo of Britta Stime and Taurie Bjerken later record a win in their consolation round match of the Grey bracket. Mehndiratta paced the Zags in singles play, posting a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 victory to advance to the second round. In the singles Grey bracket, Stime battled back to record a three-set victory in her consolation match. “I was very happy to see two of our top doubles teams play well in their first matches this season,” stated head coach D.J. Gurule. “Although we struggled in our singles matches, I was pleased to see our young players get out and compete today. We need to regain some focus in our singles matches and continue to play well in doubles tomorrow.” The Bulldogs continue play at the Cougar Classic in Pullman Saturday before wrapping up the first weekend of the fall season Sunday.
