CHENEY, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team saw five of its singles and doubles teams record victories and advance to the second round of the GU/EWU Fall Tournament Friday.

Kristina Zauere, a 2009 All-West Coast Conference second team selection, recorded a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Constance Alexander of the University of Montana to move into the Saturday's Singles Flight A second round of play. Britta Stime battled tough to earn a three set victory over Montana's Kayla Moyse 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in the Singles Flight B first round while fellow GU newcomer Gabrielle Verspieren celebrated her birthday with a 6-2 6-1 win over Montana State University's Lucy Fairbotham in the first round of the Singles Flight C bracket.

"Kristina did a great job of fighting back to win her match," commented head coach D.J. Gurule. "She was down 2-5 in the first set and then won 11 of the next 13 games to get the win. Britta battled hard and did a great job to come away with a tough three set match while Gabrielle also did a great job and looked very solid."

In the two doubles brackets, the Zags were led by the pairing of Danielle Farmer and Rika Mehndiratta who posted consecutive 8-4 and 8-5 victories in their two matches to advance to Saturday's Doubles Flight A semifinal round. GU also had the doubles team of Laura Housinger and Taurie Bjerken record an 8-2 victory in the Doubles Flight B bracket. After dropping their first round match, Stime and Verspieren paired up to post an 8-3 win in the Doubles Flight B consolation round.

"I was very pleased with our effort today," commented Gurule. "We were a lot more focused today than we were last weekend and we were able to produce some wins today."

The Bulldogs continue play at the GU/EWU Fall Tournament held in Cheney, Wash. Saturday.
