WTEN Continues to Advance at Bulldog Invite
Sept. 30, 2017
SPOKANE, Wash.--Gonzaga's women's tennis team continued its romp through the Bulldog Invite field Saturday as all four doubles teams and five individual players advanced onto main bracket championship matches inside The Stevens Center.
The Zags will sweep both doubles brackets after all four pairs won their semifinals matches Saturday. In the top flight, the Bulldog Doubles bracket, Nevada Apollo and Ashleigh Jacobs advanced with a 6-4 win over a team from Eastern Washington, and Domonique Garley and Kate Ketels battled to a 6-4 win of their own against Seattle U's top duo. They'll play each other for the title tomorrow.
In the Zag Doubles Bracket, the duos of Alex Bourguignon/Katie Day and Graciela Rosas/Haruna Tsuruta each won Saturday and will meet Sunday for the bracket title as well. They cruised over their Seattle U opponents with scores of 6-1 and 6-2, respectively.
Individually, five Zags advanced to their respective brackets' main draw finals. Apollo advanced to the top bracket's finale after a strong three-set win over Idaho's Maria Tavares, and Ashleigh Jacobs will play for her first collegiate title after a three-set win over the Redhawks' Hannah Gianan in the Blue Singles flight. Gonzaga has the White Singles title already sewn up after Tsuruta and Ketels won their semifinals - Tsuruta in two sets, Ketels in three - on Saturday, and Bourguignon will fight for the Zags Singles championship after a three-set comeback victory over SU's Kali McCollister.
Garley will also play for the Blue Singles Consolation title after a 6-2, 6-0 win over Stephanie Broussard of Eastern Washington.
Gonzaga will wrap up its own Bulldog Invite - the first tournament of the season - on Sunday, Oct. 1. The doubles championships will begin at 9:00 a.m. inside The Stevens Center, and singles matches will start one hour later.
