MORAGA, Calif.- The Gonzaga University women's tennis team opened play at the Saint Mary's Classic in Moraga, Calif. Friday. Sophomore Clare Dodge and a pair of Bulldog doubles teams picked up victories in the first day of competition.

Dodge posted a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Andrea Gaitan from the University of San Francisco in her first round match of the Singles Blue Grouping. She advances to Saturday's quarterfinal matchup against an opponent yet to be determined.

Later in the afternoon, the Bulldog pairing of Dodge and senior Aglaya Kokurina played well in their two matches, posting an 8-3 first round victory over Kacie Wagner and Kelly Buckley of Santa Clara University in the Doubles White Grouping. In their quarterfinal match, Kokurina/Dodge battled Jenna Kappel and Jessica Harris from UC Davis tough but the Aggie pairing held off a strong push by the Zags to take the match 8-5.

In the Doubles Blue Grouping, freshmen Madeline Parker and Sophie Lantta won their first round match 8-4 over Shawdee Rouhafza and Sidney Brady from UC Davis. In their semifinal match up, the Bulldog paring dropped an 8-5 decision to a solid Aodhnait Lombard and Shannon Cassidy paring from the University of Nevada. Parker and Lantta will continue play in Saturday's consolation matches.

The tournament continues Saturday before wrapping up on Sunday.
