Brilliant Start to ITA Regionals for WTEN
Oct. 19, 2017
PALO ALTO, Calif.--The Gonzaga women's tennis team dominated day one of the ITA Northwest Regionals Thursday as all eight Bulldogs claimed at least one win and six reached the Round of 32 at the tournament in Palo Alto.
"Obviously we had some great wins today," said Gonzaga head coach D.J. Gurule, "but more importantly, we just played solid tennis all day. I was really impressed with our focus and determination. We have a lot of tough matches ahead of us tomorrow, but we will be ready!"
The Zags saw a school-record six singles players reach the Round of 32 Thursday. No other school has more than five individuals still active in the main bracket. Also, three Zag doubles pairs picked up wins for another program first.
Junior Nevada Apollo posted the biggest win for Gonzaga, downing sixth-seeded Caroline Lampl of Stanford in the second round 6-3, 6-4. Lampl entered the tournament ranked No. 51 in the country, giving Apollo the biggest ranked victory of her career. Sophomore Kate Ketels also claimed a win over a Pac-12 player, beating the Cardinal's Elizabeth Yao in the Round of 32.
The Zags saw great success against other West Coast Conference foes, going 8-1 in singles play against the WCC. Graciela Rosas, Haruna Tsuruta, and Domonique Garley all picked up a pair of conference victories to advance to day two. Ketels and Ashleigh Jacobs added one apiece.
Also reaching the Round of 32, Sophie Whittle took advantage of her No. 9 seed and first-round bye, breezing past UC Davis' Shirley Hall 6-0, 6-1 in her only singles match of the day.
Gonzaga was just as successful in doubles play as three of four pairs won and advanced to that bracket's Round of 32. Rosas and Whittle combined for the most dominant win, an 8-1 victory over a duo from San Francisco, while Tsuruta and Alex Bourguignon combined to beat a pair from Stanford 8-4. Garley and Ketels beat a team from Saint Mary's by the same score.
The Zags will look to carry the success over to day two of the regional championship on Friday, Oct. 20. Doubles play will begin at 9:00 a.m., again at the Taube Family Tennis Center on Stanford's campus.
