More Success at ITA Regionals for Gonzaga
Oct. 20, 2017
PALO ALTO, Calif.—It was another solid day of competition at the ITA Northwest Regionals for Gonzaga’s women’s tennis team as three doubles pairs and two individuals reached the Round of 16 Friday.
All three active doubles pairs won their lone match Friday morning, giving the Zags three teams in the doubles bracket’s Round of 16 for the first time ever. Alex Bourguignon and Haruna Tsuruta posted an upset to get there, downing five-seed Kelsie Bryant and Kristy Jorgensen of UC Davis 8-3. Sophie Whittle and Graciela Rosas dominated a pair from Portland by an 8-1 scoreline, and Domonique Garley and Kate Ketels also advanced after an 8-5 win over a squad from Sacramento State.
“This is probably some of the best doubles we have played this year,” said Gonzaga head coach D.J. Gurule. “It’s special when we can get three teams into the Round of 16.”
In singles play, all five Zags that began the day in the main bracket fell out, but not before two picked up singles wins to reach the individual Round of 16 for another program first. Apollo beat Saint Mary’s Kareena Manji in two sets for her first-ever trip to that round, and Whittle beat Fresno State’s Alessia Dario in straight sets as well. This was the junior’s second time reaching the Round of 16; she advanced just as far in 2015 as a freshman.
Both Apollo and Whittle then lost their Round of 16 matchups to seeded players from the Pac-12, Apollo to No. 9 Maria Smith of California and Whittle to No. 7 Emily Arbuthnott of Stanford. Three more Zags fell to ranked players in the Round of 32: Rosas, Garley, and Ketels.
“I’m proud of how we competed today in singles,” Gurule said. “We ran into some really great players, but nobody backed down.”
Gonzaga continues play at the ITA Northwest Regionals on Saturday, Oct. 21. Main bracket doubles play will begin at 10:00 a.m. at Taube Family Tennis Center on the Stanford University campus. I
