Zags Wrap up ITA Regionals in Consolation Play
Oct. 22, 2017
PALO ALTO, Calif.--The Gonzaga women's tennis team wrapped up a successful ITA Northwest Regional tournament Sunday by tallying six unbracketed consolation victories at Taube Family Tennis Stadium in Palo Alto, Calif.
"We are really happy with our performance at Regionals," said Gonzaga head coach D.J. Gurule. "We did an outstanding job and competed in every match we played. This is a great step for us, and we're looking forward to hosting our last fall tournament in two weeks."
Five Zags ended the regional championship with extra consolation wins. Junior Graciela Rosas posted the biggest win, downing Stanford's Naomi Rosenberg 6-1, 6-3. Fellow third-year Nevada Apollo was just a game off Rosas' pace, beating Fresno State's Juliane Triebe 6-3, 6-2. Domonique Garley, another junior, prevailed over FSU's Alessia Dario in two sets as well.
Picking up three-set victories, senior Alex Bourguignon beat Stanford's Elizabeth Yao 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (6), and sophomore Kate Ketels came back to win against Fresno State's Georgia Lawson 6-7 (5), 6-0, 1-0 (9).
In doubles play, Bourguignon and Haruna Tsuruta bounced back from their main bracket defeat Saturday for an 8-6 victory over Triebe and Dario Sunday. The pair, playing together for the first time this season, went 4-1 in the tournament and became the second Zag duo to reach the ITA Northwest Regional's quarterfinal.
In all, the tournament was a strong success as all eight participating Zags advanced at least one round in the main singles bracket, six survived the first day of play, and two went on to the Round of 16. In doubles, three pairs won two matches each and advanced to the Round of 16, one of several program bests at the tournament.
Gonzaga will wrap up the 2017 fall season in two weeks with their own Gonzaga Invite. That tournament will run Nov. 3-5 inside The Stevens Center.
