Rosas wins Gonzaga Invite Singles and Doubles Titles
Nov. 5, 2017
SPOKANE, Wash.—The Gonzaga women’s tennis team concluded play at the Gonzaga Invite Sunday, and junior Graciela Rosas came away with both the tournament’s singles and doubles titles to end the fall schedule.
“It was a fantastic tournament for us,” said Gonzaga head coach D.J. Gurule. “The team played really well, and it was a great way to wrap up the tournament season. They worked really hard all fall, and it definitely showed on the court. We’ll take some time to heal up and focus on school work, and then we’ll hit it hard again next spring.”
Rosas clinched the individual crown with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Montana State’s Angelina Philippova. The big win gave the Mexicali, Mexico, native a 78.3 winning percentage in singles games, higher than anyone else in the tournament field who played multiple matches. Rosas posted a 6-1, 6-0 win on day one and 6-4, 6-1 victory on day two.
In doubles play, she and partner Sophie Whittle clinched a perfect weekend, downing Portland’s Emily Soares and Anna Oberg 6-1. The pair of juniors won 18 of their 23 games played, also 78.3 percent.
The Gonzaga Invite was a multi-flight round-robin tournament between GU, Marquette, Montana State, and Portland. The tournament winners were decided by game winning percentage with a minimum of two matches played in both singles and doubles.
Overall, the Zags dominated the tournament. They went 20-2 in singles play, and five Zags finished the tournament at a perfect 3-0. Sophomore Haruna Tsuruta finished second in the singles standings after a 6-0, 6-2 win over the Bobcats’ Linda Vink; she won 75 percent of her games played over the weekend (36 of 48). Junior Domonique Garley jumped into third place with a 6-0, 6-1 victory Sunday, and Whittle took fourth after a 7-5, 6-1 win.
In doubles, Gonzaga was 8-1 throughout the three-day competition, and Garley and Ketels tied for second with two other teams. The Zag duo won 75 percent of their doubles games and counted a 6-0 win over Marquette’s Paula Tormos Sanchez and Milica Novakovic. They tied with Portland’s Soares and Lourdes Ramalle and Marquette’s Lesley Foe and Isabella Franks.
With the conclusion of the Gonzaga Invite, the Bulldogs will now turn their attention to dual play. The 2018 dual season begins Jan. 21 against Montana State, once again inside The Stevens Center.
