WTEN's Whittle Nationally-Ranked in Singles
Jan. 4, 2017
SPOKANE, Wash. -- Gonzaga women's tennis player Sophie Whittle earned a preseason ranking of No. 116 with the initial release of the Oracle/ITA Women's National Singles Rankings announced Wednesday.
Whittle, a returning All-WCC selection in both singles and doubles, went 6-4 this fall in tournament action, reaching the finals of her bracket in the SMU Invitational and the semifinals of GU's Bulldog Invite.
The Nipomo, California, native played in Gonzaga's No. 1 spot during her entire freshman campaign in dual matches, and put together a 22-11 season (9-8 in duals). Last season, she began the dual year with a three-match win streak, including a win over then-No. 51 Utah's top-seeded player in Margo Fletcher. Whittle also has two wins over WCC foes, and she led four more conference matches by a set when they were halted and left unfinished, including her WCC semifinal match against Saint Mary's.
Gonzaga will kick off the dual season at home on January 29 when they host Wyoming at 10 a.m. at the Stevens Center.
