Women’s Tennis Returns Home for Senior Day

SPOKANE, Wash.— Gonzaga women’s tennis will return home Saturday for their final home match of the season against Portland at the Stevens Center at 11 a.m. Senior Alex Bourguignon will be honored before her final match at home as a Zag.

In this past weekend’s trip to California, the Bulldogs split the weekend going 1-1. In Moraga against Saint Mary’s, the Zags battled from behind but were unable to get the final push for the win. In doubles, Nevada and Apollo and Ashleigh Jacobs earned a 6-4 win, but Sophie Whittle and Graciela Rosas fell in a tiebreak to the Gaels 7-6 (1).

Despite the loss in doubles, Whittle came out strong in her singles match with a 6-3, 6-1 win. Rosas picked up a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory, and Kate Ketels tied up the match with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win right before Saint Mary’s clinched the match.

The next day in Stockton, GU bounced back with a 4-0 sweep of Pacific. Whittle and Rosas started the day off with a 6-1 win, and it was Bourguignon and Haruna Tsuruta who clinched the point with a 7-6(4).

Whittle and Nevada Apollo pushed the lead to 3-0 with quick victories in singles play, while Rosas clinched the match against the Tigers with a 7-5, 6-3 win.

After her success in singles this past weekend, Whittle was named the West Coast Conference Singles Player of the Week. She is now currently on an eight-match winning streak. This is her second time earning the honor this year.

Gonzaga is now tied for second in the league with Saint Mary’s and Loyola Marymount with a record of 15-6 overall and 6-2 in West Coast Conference play.

The Pilots are 5-14 on the season and are 1-7 in the WCC. They picked up their first conference victory with this past weekend at Pacific with a 4-2 win.
