Zags Ranked Fifth in Northwest Region
June 7, 2017
SPOKANE, Wash.—After a program-best 17-4 record and first-ever spot in the WCC Championships finale in 2017, the Gonzaga women’s tennis team earned a top-five spot in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Northwest Regional rankings Wednesday.
The Bulldogs were tabbed as the fifth-best team in the Northwest region, which includes all Division I teams from Washington, Oregon, and Northern California. It is the second time in program history they’ve earned a regional ranking, climbing up four spots from last season’s ninth-place finish. There is no preseason regional team poll distributed by the ITA.
Two GU individuals and one doubles pair also earned spots on the poll. Sophomores Sophie Whittle and Nevada Apollo finished the season as two of the Northwest’s top singles players with Whittle claiming 16th and Apollo 18th. Both earned First Team All-WCC – Singles honors this season, going 16-7 and 22-6, respectively. In the dual season, Apollo took over at No. 1 singles for Whittle, posting a 10-3 mark and going undefeated at 5-0 against West Coast Conference foes atop the lineup. Whittle, meanwhile, was 5-0 at the top spot and 5-3 at No. 2 singles during the spring after missing some time due to injury.
Additionally, Whittle and doubles partner Graciela Rosas debuted at No. 10 in the doubles rankings. Despite only playing 13 matches together, they went 9-0 in the spring, claiming six conference victories. They earned First Team All-Conference honors for their doubles play and were the only pair in the WCC to go through the dual season undefeated. They are the first Bulldog duo to earn a spot in the regional poll.
Of the six WCC teams in the Northwest region – Gonzaga, Portland, Pacific, Saint Mary’s, San Francisco, and Santa Clara – the Bulldogs were the highest ranked at No. 5 as Saint Mary’s finished at No. 7. No other individuals or pairs from the conference made either poll.
