NLI Signee Jacobs Reaches ITF Tournament Final
June 11, 2017
CALGARY, Alberta--Future Gonzaga women's tennis player Ashleigh Jacobs added to her illustrious junior career this last week, reaching the finals of the Yonex Calgary U18 ITF Junior held at the Osten & Victor Alberta Tennis Centre.
Jacobs opened her hometown tournament with four straight wins, including a three-set thriller against blue chip prospect Meg Kowalski in the semifinal round. In that penultimate match, Jacobs took the first set 6-2, but Kowalski, a signee with No. 6 Georgia, won the second by a break at 4-6. In deciding frame, Jacobs bounced back for a 6-4 win of her own, clinching the match and punching her ticket to the tournament championship.
That final match was another close three-setter against fellow Canadian Nifemi Akinbiyi. Jacobs took the finale's first set 2-6 and forced a tiebreak in the second before falling in the third, coming just short of her fifth career ITF title.
In doubles play during the Yonex Calgary U18 ITF, she and partner Karin Hamilton reached the semifinals before falling in a third set super tiebreak.
A fall signee with the Zags, Jacobs will join the Zags' women's tennis team when school begins this August. The fall tournament season will begin in September.
