TYLER, Texas – Gonzaga women’s tennis junior Domonique Garley took home the title on Monday at the ITA Summer Circuit event hosted at both Tyler Junior College and the University of Texas at Tyler.
Garley, who will be a senior on the Zags roster this fall, dropped just one set in four matches on her way to the individual title.
Garley, the No. 1 seeded player in the event, earned a first-round bye and matched up with Sumvruta Iyengar in the round of 16. Garley was tested early by Iyengar, winning in two sets with a first-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (8), 7-5. Garley made quick work in the quarterfinal round, defeating Ashleigh Penshorn 6-0, 6-2 to advance to the semifinals.
Garley matched up with No. 4-seeded Nicole Petchey in the semifinals, defeating the Southern Methodist freshman in straight sets to advance to the title match. Garley faced No. 6-seeded Karla De La Luz Montalvo in the title match, falling 1-6 in the first set to give Montalvo the early advantage. Garley battled back, taking the second set 6-3 and continued on with the third set tiebreaker 10-4 to earn the individual title.
