Aug. 11, 2017
TEMPE, Ariz.—Two members of the Gonzaga women’s tennis team have earned spots in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Summer Championships after strong performances on the ITA Summer Circuit.
Both Kate Ketels and Nevada Apollo reached the summer finale after playing twice each on the ITA’s Summer Circuit. In Ketels’ first tournament, hosted by Western Michigan July 1-3, she picked up a pair of two-set singles wins. Two weeks later, she and doubles partner Catherine Orfanos of Montana reached the third round of the doubles bracket at Notre Dame.
Apollo, meanwhile, advanced to the singles bracket’s third round at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps July 15-17 and then reached the quarterfinals of the Cal State – Los Angeles stop of the tour to end the month of July.
Both Bulldogs are already in Fort Worth, Texas, for the National Summer Championships, which run August 12-15. Ketels will begin things at 8:00 a.m. Central with her first-round singles matchup, and Apollo starts her singles campaign on Sunday, August 13 due to a first-round bye.
