WINNIPEG, Manitoba—Incoming Gonzaga women’s tennis player Ashleigh Jacobs claimed a silver medal Saturday at the 2017 Canada Games held in Winnipeg.
Jacobs medaled in singles play after a 2-1 record in the tournament. She entered in the bracket’s quarterfinal round and quickly advanced after a two-set victory. In the semifinal, the Calgary, Alberta, native matched up against Washington signee Vanessa Wong, dispatching the future Husky 6-1, 3-6, 6-1. While playing for the gold, Jacobs fell to Ontario’s Rhea Verma 7-5, 6-3 to take silver.
The incoming freshman also played on Alberta’s Mixed Team, leading the squad to the bronze medal match.
At Gonzaga, Jacobs will join eight returners from last year’s squad that reached the title match of the West Coast Conference Championships. GU’s fall season begins September 29 with the first day of the Bulldog Invite, which will take place inside The Stevens Center in Spokane.
