Whittle Enters 2017-18 Ranked in Top 100
Sept. 12, 2017
TEMPE, Ariz.--Gonzaga women's tennis junior Sophie Whittle is among the top 100 players in the nation, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
The Nipomo, Calif., native broke into the organization's preseason rankings at No. 89, announced Tuesday. That is the highest placement ever for a Zag player according to available records. She reached her previous high of #102 last February early in the dual season.
Last season, she earned First Team All-West Coast Conference honors in both singles and doubles play. Individually, she went 10-3 in duals, splitting time between the No. 1 and No. 2 singles position. In doubles, she was 12-2 in the spring and a perfect 9-0 at No. 2 doubles with playing partner Graciela Rosas.
Whittle will begin her junior campaign Saturday, Sept. 30 at the ITA All-American Championships, held at Riviera Tennis Club in Los Angeles, Calif., as the first Zag to ever compete in the tournament. The rest of the squad will open the 2017-18 schedule on Friday, Sept. 29, at their own Bulldog Invite. That home competition will run from Sept. 29-Oct. 1 inside The Stevens Center in Spokane.
