Eight Bulldogs Post Wins In First Day Of Cougar Classic

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Gonzaga University women’s tennis team opened its fall season at the Cougar Classic hosted by Washington State University Friday. Eight Bulldogs posted wins in the first day of competition with freshman Monica Price leading the way with two victories. Price advanced to the Saturday’s third round in the #4 Singles flight after beating Tessa Trunnel from the University of Portland 6-2, 6-3 and later beating Jennifer Coll from Montana State University 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. Senior Aglaya Kokurina posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Barbara Maciocha from the University of Idaho in the first round of the #1 Singles bracket before dropping her second round match later in the afternoon. Sophomore Rika Mehndiratta went 1-1 on the day, beating Daniela Cohen from Idaho 6-2, 6-4 in the #1 Singles consolation round. Sophomores Clare Dodge and Danielle Farmer each went 1-1 while playing in the #2 Singles bracket. Dodge advanced to the second round after edging Eastern Washington University’s Kelsey Knight 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 but later dropped her second round match. Farmer lost her first match of the day but bounced back with a come-from-behind 1-6, 7-6, 11-9 win over Montana State University’s Martyna Nowak. In the #3 Singles bracket, freshmen Madeline Parker and Sophie Lantta each picked up victories as Parker’s 6-4, 6-1 win over Natalie Kirch from the University of Idaho advanced her to the second round. Lantta bounced back from a first round defeat to win her consolation match over Jana Siwa from Idaho, 6-3, 6-4. In addition to Price’s success in the #4 Singles bracket, sophomore Laura Housinger also posted a first round win, beating Caitlin Stocking from Portland State University 5-7, 6-3, 6-1.
In #2 Doubles action, sophomore Allyson Lee teamed up with Housinger to beat Anabel Sanchez/Judy Liening from Eastern Washington 8-2. Lantta/Parker later defeated Dalkin/Stocking from PSU 8-4 and freshman Kristina Zauere paired up with Price to post an 8-6 win over Kirch/Siwa from Idaho. The Bulldogs continue play at the Cougar Classic on Saturday and Sunday. |
