WTEN Heads to Regional Championship
Oct. 18, 2017

SPOKANE, Wash.—The Gonzaga women’s tennis team resumes its fall campaign this weekend as the Bulldogs travel to Palo Alto, Calif., for the ITA Northwest Regionals.

Eight Zags will make the trip to Palo Alto, Calif., to compete for the regional championship. Stanford has hosted the tournament since 2007, and Gonzaga has found recent success by having at least one player reach the Round of 32 in each of the last five seasons. Two years ago, then-freshman Sophie Whittle reached the quarterfinals for the first time in program history, and that same year, she and partner Samantha Polayes also reached the doubles quarterfinals during another program-best run.

Last season, Alex Bourguignon led the way for the Zags, advancing to the Round of 32 after dispatching a pair of West Coast Conference foes in two sets. She and Nevada Apollo also picked up a main bracket doubles victory.

Eight Zags opened the year at their own Bulldog Invite with Apollo, Bourguignon, Haruna Tsuruta, and Ashleigh Jacobs going undefeated at 3-0 and winning their singles brackets. In doubles, Apollo and Jacobs combined for a perfect record to win their doubles flight, as did Tsuruta and Graciela Rosas. Whittle, meanwhile, went 1-1 at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, losing her first-round matchup but winning a consolation contest.

Junior Domonique Garley and sophomore Kate Ketels will also take the courts this weekend.

Play begins at the ITA Northwest Regionals on Thursday, Oct. 19, and will last until Monday, Oct. 23. Start times and draws may be found at www.GoZags.com once available.
