Zags Will Host Tournament Season Finale this Weekend.
Nov. 2, 2017
SPOKANE, Wash.—The Gonzaga University women’s tennis team will wrap up the fall tournament season at home this weekend as they host the Gonzaga Invite Friday, Nov. 3-Sunday, Nov. 5 inside The Stevens Center.
The Zags come into the Gonzaga Invite with momentum after a strong showing at the ITA Northwest Regionals Oct. 19-23. All eight Bulldogs who participated advanced at least one round in the main singles bracket, and both Nevada Apollo and Sophie Whittle reached the Round of 16. In doubles, Alex Bourguignon and Haruna Tsuruta battled into the doubles quarterfinals, equaling the deepest run by a duo in program history.
Apollo leads the team with an 8-1 singles record during the fall season, and Bourguignon and Tsuruta are each tied at second at six wins. In doubles play, Bourguignon and Tsuruta are 4-1 after their trip to the ITA Regional quarters, Tsuruta and Graciela Rosas went undefeated at 3-0 during the Bulldog Invite, and Apollo and Ashleigh Jacobs lead the way with five wins together after playing in both tournaments.
The Gonzaga Invite, GU’s second home tournament of the fall, is a multi-flight round robin tournament with the Bulldogs, Marquette, Montana State, and Portland participating. The singles player and doubles team with the best game winning percentage will take home the tournament titles.
In last year’s Gonzaga Invite, Apollo finished as the only undefeated Bulldog during round robin play, but Oregon’s Julia Eshet won the singles title. Eshet and partner Marlou Kluiving took the doubles crown.
Singles play begins at 10:00 a.m. on Nov. 3-4 and 8:00 a.m. Nov. 5. Doubles matches will start approximately two and a half hours later on all three days.
