Bourguignon/Tsuruta Earn First-ever Doubles Ranking
Nov. 15, 2017
TEMPE, Ariz.—Three members of Gonzaga’s women’s tennis team earned their first career national rankings Wednesday as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) revealed its latest national poll.
Senior Alex Bourguignon and sophomore Haruna Tsuruta entered the doubles rankings in a tie for 53rd. The Bulldog duo went 6-1 together during the fall tournament season and reached the quarterfinals at the ITA Northwest Regionals in October, downing one seeded team and two from Pac-12 schools in the process. They also went 2-0 at the Gonzaga Invite earlier this month.
Bourguignon and Tsuruta are the first Zag duo to ever receive a national doubles ranking.
Also earning her first career national ranking, Nevada Apollo vaulted into the singles poll, tying for 103rd. The junior from Las Vegas, Nevada, posted a 9-1 fall record. She won the Bulldog Invite’s top bracket to begin the season, and she reached the ITA Regionals’ Round of 16 a few weeks later. Apollo beat the bracket’s sixth-seeded player, Stanford’s Caroline Lampl, at the regional championships, along with foes from Sacramento State and Saint Mary’s.
Before Apollo, only fellow junior Sophie Whittle had ever been ranked in the ITA’s national singles poll.
The Bulldogs will begin the 2018 dual season on Sunday, Jan. 21, with a home match against Montana State.
