MISSOULA, Mont. - The Gonzaga University women's volleyball team closed out the University of Montana Tournament with a 3-0 loss to UC Riverside Saturday evening. The Highlanders defeated the Bulldogs by the scores of 25-17, 25-20 and 25-22.

Gonzaga (1-3) closed out the match with 38 total team kills, only four less than UC Riverside (3-1), with senior middle blocker Elaina Renius leading the charge with her fourth-straight double-figure kill match. Renius had 14 kills in the loss along with three solo blocks, one block assist and two digs. Also strong offensively for the Zags was junior outside hitter Michelle Boevers who tallied 11 kills.

UC Riverside had two players finish in double-digit kills, including Kelly Fink who registered a match-high 15 kills. Kelly Simpson added 10 kills for the Highlanders.

The Bulldogs were able to hold a huge edge in digs, finishing the match with 36 digs, while holding the Highlanders to only 26. Freshman setter Denise Van de Mortel led the way for Gonzaga with nine. Senior libero Paige Dillingham added eight digs and sophomore defensive specialist Allyson Powell collected six.

The Zags return home to prepare the first week of classes and for the University of Washington Tournament next week. Gonzaga will open tournament play against Washington on Thursday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. and then round out the tournament with matches against Portland State University (1 p.m.) and Boise State University (5 p.m.) on Friday, Sept. 5.
