Women's Volleyball Drops Another Five-Set Match

PITTSBURGH, Penn. - Playing its third-straight, and fifth overall, five-set match, Gonzaga University women's volleyball dropped a 3-2 decision to Virginia Commonwealth University in the Bulldogs second match of the University of Pittsburgh Invitational. The Zags, who were down 2-1, rallied with a 25-16 fourth set victory to push the contest to the deciding set. GU could not sustain its momentum though, falling 15-4 to VCU in the all-important set. Gonzaga now holds a 5-9 overall record after the 24-26, 25-22, 25-15, 16-25, 15-4 setback. Virginia Commonwealth is now 7-4 on the year. The Bulldogs, who held the total kill advantage over the Rams 64-59, had three players hit double figure kills. Senior Elaina Renius had a match-tying high of 17 kills; while junior Michelle Boevers added 15 and junior Layne Brosky tallied 11. Gonzaga also held a huge advantage in digs, finishing with 89 to Virginia Commonwealth's 76. Senior libero Paige Dillingham led the way with a match-high 24 digs, two shy of her career-high. Freshman setter Denise Van de Mortel collected a career-high 20 digs, while sophomore Allyson Powell had 16 and sophomore Emily Johnson had 12. The only areas the Rams did edge the Bulldogs out on were total blocks and service aces. VCU had 18 total blocks and seven service aces, while GU finished with 10 blocks and six aces. Overall, Virginia Commonwealth was led by Ariel Newman and Ivana Rich. Newman had a double-double of 17 kills and 11 digs, while Rich had 11 kills, 10 block assists, one solo block and two digs. Gonzaga will look to get back on the winning track when it faces Eastern Michigan University Saturday in its final match of the Pittsburgh Invitational. Match time is set for 8 a.m.
