Women's Volleyball Sweeps Eastern Michigan

PITTSBURGH, Penn. - The Gonzaga University women's volleyball team closed out the University of Pittsburgh Invitational with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-17) sweep over Eastern Michigan University Saturday morning. The Bulldogs finished the tournament with a 1-2 overall record and are now 6-9 on the season. The Eagles, on the other hand, ended the tournament with a 0-3 record and are now 5-9 overall. Gonzaga had their second-best hitting match of the season, finishing with a .351 attacking percentage, including an impressive .500 hitting clip in the third set. The Zags totaled 43 kills, and only nine errors, on 97 total attempts for their best hitting match away from home this season. Junior outside hitter Michelle Boevers led the way, tallying a match-high 10 kills and a .409 attacking percentage. Senior Elaina Renius and juniors Emily Johnson and Layne Brosky all added eight apiece in the victory. Defensively, Gonzaga out-dug Eastern Michigan 48-39. Six Bulldogs had five or more digs in the win, including sophomore Allyson Powell who collected a team-high 10. Senior libero Paige Dillingham and freshman Denise Van de Mortel each had eight, while Johnson finished with seven. Eastern Michigan struggled offensively, finishing with a dismal .074 hitting percentage. No player reached double figure kills; the closest was Victoria Randolph who had eight. Overall, EMU finished with 31 team kills and 23 total errors on 108 attempts. Gonzaga has 12 days before it hits the floor again. The Bulldogs will use the rest and practice days to prepare for the opening of West Coast Conference play. GU opens WCC action at the University of San Diego on Thursday, Oct. 2. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
