Zags Equal Best Start to WCC Play in Program History
Sept. 30, 2017

Box Score

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.--For the first time since 1990 and just the third time in program history, the Gonzaga University volleyball team is 4-0 through two weekends of West Coast Conference action. The Zags got that fourth win Saturday with a 3-2 comeback victory (13-25, 16-25, 25-21, 25-16, 15-5) at San Francisco.

The five-set victory is Gonzaga's (9-7 overall) fourth in a row and fifth of the season. On Saturday, the Zags rallied from a two-set deficit after ceding the first two frames to the host Dons. That's the first such win in nearly three years for the Zags; they last rallied from an 0-2 scoreline Oct. 10, 2014 at home against Pacific.

"We found another way to get it done today," said Gonzaga head coach Diane Nelson. "Tiyana Hallums, Jenna Kuehn, and Alyse Whitaker stepped up and took the load for us today."

Kuehn led the Zags with 12 kills in the match, 11 of which came during the final three sets. Five of Whitaker's nine kills and all three of her blocks came after intermission, and Hallums hit .583 with seven kills once switching out of the libero jersey. The junior defensive specialist/outside hitter added 14 digs as well, nine of which came in sets three and four.

The Bulldogs' attack percentage rose throughout the match as they didn't commit any attack errors in either the fourth or fifth frames. In that deciding fifth set, the Zags tallied nine kills on 12 attacks for a .750 percentage. They went on to take the frame 15-5.

GU also served up 11 aces against the Dons, the program's highest total in five years. Both Whitaker and Faith Smith led Gonzaga with three service aces apiece.

At 4-0 in WCC play, the Zags have now matched the opening record of the 1990 squad that eventually went 12-2 in conference action and reached the NCAA Tournament. They also began the 1989 conference schedule 4-0, too. This year's squad now returns to Spokane for a home weekend against the two Southern California schools. That homestand starts Thursday, Oct. 5, with a 6:00 p.m. match against Pepperdine.
