Volleyball Falls Flat In Loss To San Diego
Oct. 2, 2004
SAN DIEGO - One night after nearly pulling the upset over No. 13 Santa Clara University, the Gonzaga University Bulldogs came out flat in their second West Coast Conference match of the season as the University of San Diego Toreros steamrolled the Bulldogs in three games. USD (8-4, 2-0 WCC) won easily by scores of 30-17, 30-12 and 30-17. Gonzaga playing without the services of senior outside hitter Christina Davis fell to 4-11 overall, 0-2 in the WCC. Davis suffered an injury during last night's loss to the Broncos and will be evaluated when the team returns to Spokane on Sunday. Devon Forster provided all the offense San Diego needed on Saturday night collecting 17 kills on 28 attacks as the Toreros finished with 60 kills compared to just 20 kills for Gonzaga. Christie Dawson and Emily Haas also reached double-figures with 10 kills each. USD combined for a team attack percentage of .410 with their lowest attacking game coming in the opener with a .341 clip. Gonzaga struggled on offense all night without Davis in the line-up as senior Lauren Armas was the top Bulldogs attacker with seven kills. The Bulldogs did battle at the net finishing with 12 blocks led by freshman Briawna Mueller's five block assists. GU also struggled to dig several San Diego attacks with Jessica Herrera the top player with eight digs. Jackie Bernardin led USD with 13 digs. The Bulldogs return home to prepare for their WCC home opener against Saint Mary's College on Friday before hosting the University of San Francisco on Saturday night. Both matches start at 7 p.m. at Martin Centre.
