Women's Volleyball Woes Continue; Falls 3-1 to LMU

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Despite junior Emily Johnson tallying her third career double-double, with 11 kills and 13 digs, the Gonzaga University women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (25-20, 26-24, 25-15, 25-20) West Coast Conference decision to Loyola Marymount University at Gersten Pavilion in Los Angeles, Calif. The Bulldogs, who have now lost seven-straight, hold a 6-16 overall record and are 0-6 in conference. The Lions, who beat the University of Portland for their first WCC win of the season on Thursday, are now 12-7 overall, 2-3 in WCC play. Besides Johnson, whose double-figure kill performance was her fifth of the season and first in WCC action, the Zags only other player to finish with 10 or more kills was junior Michelle Boevers who had a team-high 15. Senior Elaina Renius was one kill away of her 17th double-digit kill performance, finishing with nine. Freshman Denise Van de Mortel, averaging 40.5 assists per match this season, dished out 43 against Loyola Marymount as Gonzaga finished with 50 kills and a .135 attacking percentage. Van de Mortel was also one dig shy of collecting her seventh double-double of the season, picking up nine on the day. Defensively, senior Paige Dillingham led the way once again for Gonzaga. The libero, who is second in the WCC in total digs with 308, collected a match-high 17 digs. Sophomore Allyson Powell added nine as the Bulldogs finished with 68 total. The Lions were led by Emily Day, older sister of Bulldog freshman Laura Day. Emily Day had a double-double of 17 kills and 15 digs for LMU, her WCC leading 12th of the season. Becky Stehling added 13 kills while Ariana Covington finished with 10. Loyola Marymount had 55 total team kills on the day and a .247 hitting clip.
Gonzaga will play its last non-conference match of the season when it welcomes Seattle University to the Martin Centre on Wednesday, Oct. 22. Match is set to begin at 7 p.m. |
