Women's Volleyball Dominates Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Gonzaga University women's volleyball team was firing on all cylinders Saturday afternoon as it earned a 3-0 sweep of West Coast Conference foe University of Portland at the Chiles Center in Portland, Ore. The Bulldogs broke a six-match WCC losing skid and have now won four-straight over the Pilots with the 25-21, 25-16 and 25-16 victory. The Zags, whose win over UP was their first in WCC this season, improved their record to 8-16 overall and 1-6 in conference, while the Pilots are now 5-17 overall, 0-7 in the WCC. Senior Elaina Renius and sophomore Caitlin Cozad paced Gonzaga with 26 of the Zags 46 total kills. Renius finished with a match-high 16 kills on 22 total attempts with only three errors for a .591 hitting percentage. It was her second-straight .500-plus attacking percentage match. Cozad added 10 kills for GU, only her third double-digit kill performance of the season, along with a .529 hitting clip. The Zags, who held the Pilots to just 32 kills on the afternoon and a .154 attacking clip, finished with a strong .333 hitting percentage. The Bulldogs also held the large advantage in digs, 46-36, and had five service aces to the Pilots two. Each team closed out the match with six total blocks. Gonzaga had one solo block and 10 block assists, while Portland finished with 12 block assists. GU had four players finish with five or more digs in the victory, including senior Paige Dillingham who had a match-high 14. Freshman setter Denise Van de Mortel, junior Emily Johnson and sophomore Allyson Powell each added seven apiece.
Gonzaga also had five players have at least one block in the match, including Cozad who led the way with four block assists and one solo block. Johnson and junior Michelle Boevers each had two block assists, while junior Layne Brosky and Van de Mortel added one block assist each. Ashley Grayson led the way for Portland with a team-high 11 kills. No other player finished in double-digits for the Pilots. Gonzaga will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. Oct. 30 when it welcomes the University of San Francisco to the Martin Centre. Game time is set for 7 p.m. |
