Zags Start Road Trip with Loss at LMU
Nov. 2, 2017
LOS ANGELES, Calif.--The Gonzaga volleyball team started a two-match road trip in Southern California Thursday night, falling to Loyola Marymount 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-16) at Gersten Pavilion in Los Angeles.
LMU took control of the match 20 points into the first set. The Bulldogs kept pace early, but a 10-1 run by the home team proved to be the difference in the opening frame. After the Lions added a wire-to-wire second-set victory, the Zags bounced back a bit in the third, hitting a match-best .222 and notching a 0.52 sideout percentage. Despite the rebound in form by Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount took the frame 25-16 to close out the match.
Redshirt senior Alyse Whitaker led the Bulldogs with seven kills on the night, and junior Faith Smith added 13 assists and six digs. Fellow junior Tiyana Hallums topped the squad with 11 digs; the defensive specialist/outside hitter entered the night fifth in the West Coast Conference in digs per set against conference foes.
Also, redshirt junior Kaylie Loewen made her WCC debut Thursday night. The middle blocker/outside hitter from Penticton, British Columbia, last played Sept. 16 against UC Riverside and missed the first 11 conference matches due to injury.
Gonzaga (13-11, 8-4 WCC) will look to bounce back Saturday, Nov. 4, with a match at Pepperdine. That contest will begin at 12 noon in Malibu, Calif. The Zags downed the Waves in five sets Oct. 5 in Spokane. A season-high five separate Bulldogs landed double-digit kills in that match
