Box Score

MALIBU, Calif.—Despite double-doubles from four Bulldogs, the Gonzaga volleyball team fell to Pepperdine 3-1 (19-25, 25-12, 25-22, 25-15) Saturday at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu, Calif.

“We learned from our match Thursday but still couldn’t get in a rhythm we wanted,” said Gonzaga head coach Diane Nelson. “There were still a lot of missed opportunities, and we have plenty of learning left to do.”

Gonzaga opened the match with a 19-25 set win, hitting .333 as a team and getting five kills from freshman Chapin Gray. Pepperdine controlled the second set to tie the match, and the Waves took the final three points in set three for the match lead. The home team closed with a 25-15 set four win to end the contest.

Gray, Jenna Kuehn, Sarah Penner, and Faith Smith each posted double-doubles at Pepperdine. Gray tallied 10 kills and 11 digs – a career high – for the first double-double of her career, and Penner too saw 10 kills and 11 digs for her fourth. Both Bulldog setters, meanwhile, paired assists and digs; Smith led the squad with 26 assists while adding 14 digs, and Kuehn added 13 and 11, respectively.

Kuehn leads the Zags with 13 double-doubles this season, and Smith is second with eight.

Pepperdine narrowly out-dug the Zags 80-77 Saturday, and each team had five players reach double-digits. Libero Tiyana Hallums led Gonzaga with 20 digs, while Waves libero Hana Lishman topped the match at 23.

The Zags (13-12, 8-5 WCC) are back in action Thursday, Nov. 9, with a showdown against No. 10 BYU. That contest will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Martin Centre in Spokane.
