SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Junior Layne Brosky and junior Michelle Boevers combined for 14 kills but it was enough offensive punch as No. 22 Santa Clara University swept Gonzaga University 3-0 in a West Coast Conference match Thursday evening in Santa Clara. The Broncos defeated the visiting Bulldogs 25-17, 25-20, 25-17 to improve to 16-6 overall and 7-3 in the WCC. Gonzaga dropped to 9-18 with the loss and 2-8 in conference.

Besides Brosky and Boevers, the Zags were led by Emily Johnson and Elaina Renius who each added five kills a piece. Johnson also had six digs and three blocks in the setback while Renius also had three kills and two digs. Freshman Denise Van de Mortel passed out only 27 assists as Gonzaga was limited to 28 kills and a .183 attack percentage in the three-set defeat.

The Broncos, who are tied for third in the WCC standings, were led by Brittany Lowe and Tanya Schmidt with 13 and nine kills, respectively. Lowe also contributed three digs, two service aces and one block. Lindsy Davigeadono dished out 36 of Santa Clara's 43 assists as the Broncos finished with 20 more kills than the Bulldogs at 48 and had a solid .313 hitting clip.

Santa Clara held the 38-27 edge in digs and had a 7-5 advantage in blocks. The Broncos Taylor O'Brien led all players with 13 digs. Senior Paige Dillingham was the Bulldog leader in digs with 11.

 

 

Gonzaga returns to action this Saturday when it plays at Saint Mary's College. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
