PORTLAND, Ore. - Gonzaga University junior Elaina Renius had a match-high 16 kills and a .517 hitting clip to help the Bulldog women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-27, 30-17, 33-31) sweep over the University of Portland in a West Coast Conference match Saturday afternoon in Portland, Ore. With the victory, the Zags earned a series sweep over the Pilots, having also swept UP on Oct. 13. It is the first WCC series sweep in a season since 2001 for Gonzaga.

With the win, the Zags improved their record to 17-11 overall and 5-7 in conference, while the Pilots dropped to 7-19 on the season and 0-12 in the WCC.

Besides Renius, who also added three block assists, the Bulldogs had two other players finish in double-figure kills. Senior Briawna Mueller added 11 kills and had a .500 attack percentage for the match, while sophomore Michelle Boevers added 10 kills and a .417 hitting clip.

Senior setter Heather Dunn passed out 43 assists as Gonzaga closed out the match with 58 team kills and a .349 hitting percentage; its highest WCC hitting percentage of the season. Dunn also had four kills, eight digs and one block assist in the win.

The Bulldogs finished the match with a huge 63-49 advantage in digs and a slight 6-3 edge in blocks. Senior Alecia Douglas and junior Paige Dillingham both had double-figure digs in the GU victory. Douglas collected a match-high 16 digs, her 20th double-digit dig performance of the season, while Dillingham added 11.

Leading the way for Portland was Jessica Clemens who finished with a double-double of 11 kills and 12 digs. Jennifer Sheedy and Ashley Grayson added 13 and 12 kills, respectively.

 

 

Gonzaga will be back in action Thursday, Nov. 15 when it welcomes the University of San Diego to the Martin Centre. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
