Volleyball Falls Short On Senior Day

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's volleyball team honored seniors Alecia Douglas, Heather Dunn, Becky Jones and Briawna Mueller Saturday afternoon but the Bulldogs fell short in their effort to send them out with a win as the University of San Francisco earned a 3-0 (30-25, 30-22, 30-19) West Coast Conference sweep at the Martin Centre. With the loss Gonzaga's season ends with a 17-13 overall record and a 5-8 mark in the WCC. It is the Zags first winning season the 1994 campaign and the best finish in the WCC in seven years. The victory improved San Francisco's record to 17-13 overall and 6-8 in conference. Jones was one dig off of collecting her 15th double-double of the season and 43rd of her career on Saturday. The outside hitter finished the contest with a team-high 10 kills and nine digs. Also having a strong day offensively for Gonzaga was Dunn and junior Elaina Renius who finished with eight and seven kills, respectively. Dunn, who finishes her career with 3,767 total assists, dished out 26 during the loss as the Bulldogs closed out the day with 35 total team kills and a dismal .157 hitting percentage. Dunn also had two block assists and four digs for GU. Douglas and Mueller led the Bulldogs defensively. Douglas collected a team-high 11 digs; her 22nd double-digit dig performance of the year. Mueller posted two block assists and one solo block in the setback. The middle blocker finishes her career with 532 total blocks, 112 solo blocks and a school-record 420 block assists. The visiting dons were led by Kristen Hasselberg and Sarah Mandala. Hasselberg finished with a match-high 16 kills, five digs and two blocks and Mandala registered 13 kills, three digs and two assists.
Darcy Carroll passed out 45 assists as San Francisco had 58 total team kills in the match and a .344 hitting clip. Brynn Maurer was the lone Don to finish in double-figure digs (16). |
