2018 Volleyball Schedule Released
June 29, 2018

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Gonzaga volleyball head coach Diane Nelson announced her team's full 2018 schedule Friday afternoon.

The Bulldogs will face a strong group of opponents this season, as 11 teams posted winning records during the 2017 campaign with eight teams winning 20 matches or more. Six teams on GU's 2018 slate advanced to the 2017 NCAA Volleyball Tournament: Hawaii, UCLA, Iowa State, Utah, BYU and San Diego. Gonzaga will host nine matches inside the Martin Centre, beginning with Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine Sept. 20 and 22.

“This nonconference lineup is going to test us early, which is exactly what I wanted us to do to be prepared for conference,” Nelson said. “I know my young kids have experience and are ready for this level of competition. Competition, rest, recovery and reload is going to be hugely important.”

The Zags will begin the year in Honolulu with three matches at the Wahine Volleyball Classic. Their season officially kicks off Aug. 24 against Hawaii, marking the first time in program history the two teams have met. Hawaii is fresh off an NCAA tournament appearance and finished the 2017 season with a 20-8 overall record. Gonzaga will then face UCLA Aug. 25; the 21-11 Bruins finished last season ranked 14th in the AVCA Coaches Poll and advanced to the NCAA regional semifinals. The Zags will close the tournament with a matchup against Big 12 foe Kansas State on Aug. 26.

The following weekend the Bulldogs head east to Missoula, Mont. for the Montana Tournament featuring Iowa State, Utah and tournament host, Montana. The Bulldogs face Iowa State, the second of two first-time opponents on the 2018 slate, on Aug. 31. The Cyclones posted a 22-7 overall record with an 11-5 mark in the Big 12, and they advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament to finish the 2017 season ranked 25th in the nation. Gonzaga’s second match of the tournament will be against Utah the evening of Aug. 31. The Utes finished the 2017 season ranked 11th in the nation with a 24-10 overall record and an appearance in the NCAA tournament regional semifinals. The Bulldogs will conclude the weekend with a match against host Montana on Saturday, Sept. 1.

Gonzaga will then travel to Portland, Ore. Sept. 7-8 for the Portland State Invitational III to face California, Fresno State and Portland State. The Bulldogs take on both California and Fresno State on Sept. 7 and close the tournament against host PSU Sept. 8. This marks the second consecutive season that Gonzaga has matched up with Portland State; the Vikings swept the Bulldogs in the final match of the Gonzaga Invitational in Spokane last season.

The Bulldogs will fly south for their final nonconference tournament the Sparky Classic, hosted by Arizona State Sept. 14-15 in Tempe, Ariz. Gonzaga opens against Texas State on Sept. 14; the Bobcats finished the 2017 season with a 25-10 overall record and a 14-2 mark in the Sun Belt, earning a trip to the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC). Next up is host Arizona State the evening of Sept. 14, and the Zags will conclude the weekend with a Sept. 15 match against Big Sky foe Northern Arizona.

“[Playing on the road for four straight weeks to open the season] will test our resilience,” Nelson said. “It’ll test our ability to learn how to recover properly, and it will test our ability to be in different environments. Which is where we have tended to struggle in the past. We’re comfortable at home; we need to get comfortable on the road.”

After the Sparky Classic, the Zags will return to Spokane for their home- and conference-opener Sept. 20 against Loyola Marymount. Pepperdine follows on Sept. 22 in the Martin Centre. The Bulldogs then hit the road once more with matches at BYU on Sept. 27 and at San Diego Sept. 29. They’ll then host Santa Clara and San Francisco Oct. 4 and 6, respectively, before traveling to California to face Saint Mary’s and Pacific Oct. 11 and 13, respectively. Gonzaga closes out the first half of West Coast Conference play with a home match against Portland on Oct. 20.

The Bulldogs will kick off the second half of the WCC slate at home, hosting San Diego and BYU Oct. 25 and 27. The following weekend GU travels to San Francisco (Nov. 1) and Santa Clara (Nov. 3) before returning to Spokane for the final home stand of the season featuring Pacific (Nov. 8) and Saint Mary’s (Nov. 10). Gonzaga ends the regular season on the road, making stops at Pepperdine (Nov. 15), Loyola Marymount (No. 17) and at Portland (Nov. 20).

The regular-season finale against Portland marks the fifth-straight season that the Bulldogs conclude the regular season against the Pilots during the week of Thanksgiving.

Gonzaga will feature 18 players on the 2018 roster: 14 returners and four newcomers. Of the newcomers, two will be freshmen while both Peighton De Von and Perry Ramsey arrive at Gonzaga with one year of eligibility left.
