Blinn Tabbed as First Team All-Region
Dec. 8, 2015
LEXINGTON, Ky.--After two years of Honorable Mentions, redshirt senior Savannah Blinn broke through in the regional awards Tuesday by earning a spot on the All-Pacific North Region's First Team as announced by the American Volleyball Coaches' Association.
Blinn is the first player in program history to receive three All-Region honors in her career. Three others - Lisa Petticord, Erica Cordy, and Kelley Cunningham -each received two from 1989 to 1992, and two of those earned First Team honors. Cunningham is the last Bulldog to do so as she made the All-Pacific Region's top squad in 1992 while Petticord was the first Zag to reach First Team All-Region in 1990.
"A number of good things happened in this program during the late `80s and early `90s, and Savannah certainly has been a catalyst in bringing the program back to the levels of success experienced during that era," said Gonzaga volleyball head coach Dave Gantt. "To have broken records that have been in the books for 20, 25 years is quite a statement, especially since we're using rally scoring instead of sideout scoring. She's firmly entrenched in the history of the program. We're on the volleyball map as a result of her involvement and it certainly seems like her five years went by way too rapidly."
During her final collegiate season, the opposite hitter once again led the Bulldogs with 475 kills, averaging 4.03 per set. Those 475 kills are fourth-most in the conference and 40th in the nation, and she's also fourth and among the top 50 with 531.5 total points as well. On Nov. 19 at Saint Mary's, she climbed into second on the Bulldogs' all-time kills list and ended up finishing her career with 1,728. That total is also eighth-highest among all active Division I players, and her 4.07 career kills per set mark is ninth as well.
Blinn also ended 2015 with a career high 85 blocks, averaging 0.72 a frame. Her personal best eight blocks in a match came during 2015 - on Sept. 11 versus Niagara - and she hit a blistering .625 Sept. 26 versus Saint Mary's for another career mark.
Earlier in the month Blinn also received First Team All-WCC honors, her third in a row. She's the second Zag to receive three First Team All-WCC awards in her career with Petticord also doing so in 1987, 1989, and 1990.
